Theses Hydraulic Structures

All research thesis at the Chair of Hydraulic Structures at the VAW begin on the 2nd Monday of the semester, which corresponds to the regular schedule for the Civil Engineering program. Deviating dates must be agreed upon with the Chair well in advance and can only be granted in individual cases with a recognized reason. Experience shows that the number of interested students for a research thesis is greater in the spring semester than in the fall semester. From the perspective of supervision capacity, we therefore welcome it if you complete your research thesis in the fall semester.

Regulations, guidelines, and further information can be found on the download pages of the degree programs:

Registration

The binding registration for a research thesis at the Chair of Hydraulic Structures is done external page via this form. It is only valid after confirmation by email from the VAW. Please note the binding registration deadlines:

  • June 30 for work in the fall semester
  • December 31 for work in the spring semester

Topics for Master's and Project Work

Current research projects at the Chair of Hydraulic Structures form the basis for offered research thesis (e.g., experimental research or hydro- and morphodynamic modeling). They are continuously published under "Current Topics" and are awarded as soon as a suitable person/group for the project has been found. Individual thesis can also be carried out multiple times.

Practical topics in collaboration with engineering firms or specialist authorities (e.g., in the field of hydropower or flood protection) primarily arise from the initiative of the students. Under "Own Topic Proposals," you will find a list of contacts from practice and further information on how to proceed. Individual topic proposals with a practical reference are also published under "Current Topics."

Topics for Bachelor's Theses

Bachelor's theses often include literature or concept studies as well as data evaluations on current research topics. Taking the "Hydraulic Engineering" lecture parallel to the Bachelor's thesis (if not completed before) is highly recommended.

Bachelor's theses are usually completed in groups, where the contributions of individual students must be listed separately. Suitable topics are continuously published under "Current Topics" and are awarded as soon as a suitable group for the project has been found. Individual papers can also be carried out multiple times.

Own topic proposals are also possible for Bachelor's theses.

Requirements and Guidelines

In a few weeks, a guide to writing research thesis will be available here. It will regulate the requirements and procedures for the individual types of work (Master's thesis, Bachelor's thesis, project work).
