The Institute
Water and ice are our passion at the Laboratory of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Glaciology (VAW). We work in the domains of river engineering, glaciology, numerical modelling and hydraulic engineering. Our fields of activity are inland waters, hydropower, glaciers, natural hazards, river restoration, and river infrastructure. We contribute to the availability of clean and renewable electricity, to the protection against floods and cryospheric hazards, to sustainable watercourses and to the generation of new knowledge in the corresponding fields.
In research, we aim at being at the international forefront in hydraulic structures, eco-hydraulics, fluvial systems, glaciers, and ice sheets. Our research findings constantly enter into teaching, where we are highly motivated to educate the next generation of engineers and researchers with state-of-the-art knowledge, methods and tools. We also emphasize the transfer of our research results and technical developments to industry, practitioners and decision-makers. To do so, we regularly organize events such as workshops, seminars, conferences and continuing education courses, often in collaboration with partners from authorities, industry and professional associations. Our research, teaching and consultation services are based upon mutual respect and ethical behavior.
